North Queensland Legal Practitioners 1861-1964

The North Queensland Legal Practitioners Online Database provides members of the public with historical information about judges, barristers and solicitors who practised in North Queensland from the first non-indigenous settlement at Bowen in 1861 until 1964.

The research of Dr Dorothy Gibson-Wilde forms the foundation of this resource. Dr Gibson-Wilde, who has spent more than 30 years researching the history of North Queensland, is the author of histories of the Townsville Magistrates Court and Supreme Court, as well a history of Townsville legal firm Wilson, Ryan and Grose. This database places the fruits of her research in the public domain, making available a significant resource to those with an interest in the social history of this region.

The database provides in-depth information about legal practitioners known to have worked in North Queensland: their names, biographies, the towns in which they practised, the firms for which they worked and the positions they held. The database is a versatile tool, whose entries can be searched by person, town or firm.

The North Queensland Legal Practitioners Online Database is an evolving project, which is expanded as new information comes to light. We would invite members of the public to assist us by providing further details about individuals or firms. Please contact the Supreme Court Librarian.
