Diane Soon was born in New Guinea on the 28th of June 1952. After moving to Brisbane in the late sixties and completing Senior School in 1969, Diane commenced her studies at teachers college. Two years later, she changed to Social Work and graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work in 1979. In the same year, Diane began a part-time law degree at the University of Queensland. Diane was admitted as a solicitor in 1986 and worked at the UQ Student Legal Service until she established a sole practice at West End in 1988. Diane’s practice spanned the length and breadth of the legal system, but she dealt primarily with legal aid cases – she had a "passion for the vulnerable in society". During her career, Diane strongly advocated social issues and was a volunteer at a number of community legal centres throughout Brisbane, particularly the Women’s Legal Service. Diane passed away in July 1996 after a two year battle with brain cancer.
