Justice Douglas was a member of a prominent and distinguished legal family. His father, grandfather and great-uncle were all eminent former members of the Supreme Court. At his swearing-in as a Supreme Court Judge in 1999, he expressed his pride that for over 50 years, the Douglas family has had at least one of its members sitting on the Supreme Court of Queensland bench. Bob Douglas’s grandfather, Robert Johnstone Douglas, presided over the Supreme Court in Townsville between 24 January 1923 and 12 April 1953.

Bob Douglas’s great uncle, Edward Archibald Douglas, was Justice of the Supreme Court from 22 March 1929 until his death on 27 August 1947.

E A Douglas married Annette Power, who was the daughter of Mr Justice Power of Rockhampton.


Bob Douglas’s father, James Archibald Douglas, who was a Supreme Court Judge from 11 February 1965 until his death on 2 February 1984.
