Biographical Notes
Anthe Ioanna Philippides was educated at Sommerville House School, South Brisbane (1976). She attended The University of Queensland (1979) graduating as a Bachelor of Arts and Laws with first class honours and the University Medal in Law (1982). She was also the recipient of the Morris Fletcher & Cross Prize in Law, the John Hughes Wilkinson Memorial Prize, and the Women Lawyers’ Association Prize. Justice Philippides was awarded a British Council Commonwealth Scholarship in 1984 to read for the Master of Laws at The University of Cambridge.
Justice Philippides was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1984, taking silk in 1999, and was also admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Courts of New South Wales and the Solomon Islands.
As a barrister, she developed an expertise in maritime law. She was elected Vice-President (1994-2000) and President (2000-2003) of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand. She also served on a number of maritime bodies, including as a Director of the Port of Brisbane Corporation (1993-1996, 1999-2000), Chairperson of the Maritime Industry Consultative Council (1994-1996), a member of the Marine Board of Queensland (1996-1998), Councilor of the Australian National Maritime Museum (1998-2000) and the Australian Maritime College, Launceston (1999-2000) and as a member of the Commonwealth Statutory Fishing Rights Allocation Review Panel (1998-2000). She was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Australian Law Reform Commission for its Review of the Marine Insurance Act 2000 (Cth).
Justice Philippides was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland on 14 December 2000. She has served as President of the Land Appeal Court of Queensland and as a judge and President of the Queensland Mental Health Court.
She is a member of the Commonwealth Admiralty Rules Committee and a Titular member of the Comite Maritime International. She serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Prior to her appointment as a judge, Justice Philippides served as Honorary Vice Consul at Brisbane for the Republic of Cyprus (1988-2000).
