Justice Gotterson holds a Bachelor of Commerce (1970) and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (1973) from The University of Queensland.

In 1973 Justice Gotterson was admitted as a solicitor and then a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1975. His Honour was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1988. Justice Gotterson is a former president of the Bar Association of Queensland (1997–99), the Australian Bar Association (1998–99) and the Law Council of Australia (2003–04).

From 1994 to 2012 Justice Gotterson served on the Supreme Court Library Committee. His Honour is the current deputy president of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration and chair of the Bond University Law Advisory Board.

Justice Gotterson was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2014 for distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law, to legal education, administration and professional standards through a range of senior roles, and to the community of Queensland.

Justice Gotterson was appointed a judge of the Queensland Court of Appeal in 2012.
