Biographical Notes

Robert William Gotterson was born on 28 December 1949 in Brisbane, to Alan Robert Gotterson, chartered accountant, and his wife, Margaret Isabel (née Butcher). He completed his secondary education at Brisbane Boys’ College before attending the University of Queensland and graduating Bachelor of Commerce (1970) and Bachelor of Laws with honours (1973). After completing articles of clerkship with the Brisbane firm of Feez Ruthning & Co, he was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland on 13 March 1973.

On 18 December 1975 Gotterson was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland and then commenced a period of twelve years in practice at the bar in Brisbane, prior to taking silk on 10 November 1988. He married Helen (née Froud) in 1975. They have three children. Gotterson was president of the Bar Association of Queensland (1997-99), president of the Australian Bar Association 1998-99) and president of the Law Council of Australia (2003-04). He has served on the council of the Australasian Institute of Judicial Administration (since 2004) and the Supreme Court Library Committee (1994-2012). He was chairman of St Peters Lutheran College Foundation Ltd. (1994-97).

On 26 April 2012, Gotterson was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and a Judge of Appeal.
