Biographical Notes

David Octavius Joseph North was born on 24 March 1956 in Brisbane, Queensland, to Octavius Joseph North, barrister, and his wife Mary (née Wilson). He was educated at Ironside State School, Church of England Grammar School (now ACGS) and the University of Queensland. North graduated Bachelor of Economics (1976) and Bachelor of Laws (1979). North served as associate to Dunn J (1978) and Sheahan J (1979).

On 18 December 1979, North was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland. He was employed for two years at the Brisbane firm of Tully & Wilson before commencing practice at the bar in January 1982. He married Margaret Newbery in 1983. They had three daughters. North took silk on 18 December 1996. He served on the Bar Council of the Bar Association of Queensland (1994–2000), on the Appeal Costs Fund Board (1998-2011) and as a member (2001-04) and then chairman (2004-11) of the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting. In 2009 his first wife (Margaret) passed away and following his appointment to the Court, North married Jane Seawright.

On 18 July 2011, North was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and has served as Northern Judge.
