The Queensland Council for Civil Liberties has been organised for a common purpose — to safeguard the civil liberties of all. This book examines what civil liberties are and the sources of opposition to these rights. It describes how Queensland Governments used legislation to restrict the civil liberties of Queensland citizens. It was the continual government suppression of civil liberties during the 1960's anti Vietnam War demonstrations which led to the establishment of the QCCL in 1966. The book brings to life the struggles of the 1970s and 1980s when the Council rallied to oppose the never ending threats to civil liberties.

Full-text Queensland judgments are published within 24 hours of receipt by the Library and can be accessed via the Judgments page on this site. The Supreme Court Library is a non-lending library; however practitioners are able to borrow material for use in court. Anyone with a current practising certificate is also entitled to use the Library outside of normal opening hours and should consult our after-hours access FAQ for more details.

Further information about Library access and facilities can be located on our Visiting the SCQL page.

Legal Research Training

The Library offers a free legal research training service for members of the legal profession. Training programs can be tailored by Library staff to suit individual needs or training can be arranged with specialist trainers in the use of specific online databases, such as Westlaw or LexisNexis. Please contact the Information Services staff for more details.

Historical Document Digitisation Program

In 2006, the SCQL launched its Historical Document Digitisation Program to conserve original documents relating to Queensland’s legal heritage. An amendment to the Supreme Court Library Act 1968 in 2005 has allowed the Library to receive and preserve historic documents without affecting any legal professional privilege attached to the material. Under the protection of the new legislation, law firms are encouraged to consider depositing historical records with the Library to guarantee preservation for future generations.
